Resources

These resources are ones that I’ve developed to serve our local church.  I hope these resources are a blessing to you and will be useful to you in serving your local church.   Feel free to use them and reproduce them as you need to.  I give a short description of each resource below:

Foundational Discipleship (ABOUT)

I wrote a basic discipleship course called ABOUT for my neighbors who have come to faith in the last several years from a non-Christian background and desired an introduction to the Christian worldview.  These sessions are designed to be used in relational discipleship (so questions can be answered).  The study requires the student to give about 20-30 minutes a week to reading Bible passages and answering questions. This study is basic and introductory – perfect for new Christians or those exploring the faith for the first time.

Every Man, Woman, and Child: A Study in Missio Dei
This twelve week study is an examination of the biblical foundation, historical examples, and personal elements of the Mission of God.  The phrase “every man, woman, and child” is a key one in the vision of our association of churches in Greater Austin.  We have a desire to see every person (regardless of age, ethnicity, income, gender, or lifestyle) hear the gospel proclaimed from the lips of someone they know personally.  Our prayer is that everyone who goes through this study would have a better grasp of God’s Mission in the world and a personal plan for how they are going to live on mission with God.

GRUDEM THEOLOGY STUDY: I wrote a study-guide that goes with Wayne Grudem’s abbreviated systematic theology text called Bible Doctrine. Even abbreviated, the book runs around 500 pages so it can be a challenge for some lay people.  This study includes some questions related to Grudem’s text, and then questions directly from the Scriptures.  It also includes weekly passages for memorization.  You will notice that I don’t agree with all of Grudem’s positions and so require some additional reading of theological journal articles and book chapters as supplemental.  I’ve included the additional readings as attachments at the bottom.

HERMENEUTICS 101: this study is a 12-week guided tour of the inductive method (observation, interpretation, and application).  I have included supplemental helps that are designed to help someone who is learning their way around the Bible (a 4+1 Bible Reading Plan, a 2-page overview of the books of the Bible, and a one-page timeline of biblical events).  This study is designed to be accompanied by some kind of Bible-reading plan.  There are no outside readings or homework included in this study because the assumption is that the students who are going through it are reading the Bible every day.  Therefore, part of each session is reviewing how everyone is doing in their daily Bible reading and how they are using the skills from this study to improve their understanding and application of what they are reading.
